About This Quote

Oh Lion in a peculiar guise, Sharp Roman road to Paradise, Come eat me up I'll pay thy toll With all my flesh and keep my soul. This poem is a homage to the lion. The poem is a bit macabre as it is a metaphor for a soul being eaten by a lion. It is a tale of how the lion has been tricked into eating the body of the soul.

The poet attempts to persuade the lion to consume the soul because otherwise the soul will be lost forever. However, the lion refuses as he can't eat his own flesh as it would constitute cannibalism. In an ironic twist the poet has eaten the flesh of his own soul so as not to lose it forever.
